Fire Up Your Motivation Levels
Feeling uninspired? These simple strategies can help you to power through the drag
You could be feeling the effects of the intention-behaviour (IB) gap – that’s the disconnect between knowing what you need to do and actually doing it. Follow these tips to rediscover your drive and give your energy levels an instant lift!
CLENCH YOUR FISTS
When you’re faced with the temptation to quit when the going gets tough, or break your carefully-controlled diet with a snack, try clenching your fists! This action physically sends a surge of energy into the willpower part of your brain, making it easier to resist temptation, say researchers at the National University of Singapore.
TACKLE ONE THING AT A TIME
Researchers from Emory University say that switching mindset too soon – which is what tends to happen when you try to do too many things at once, saps your energy and discipline, making you less likely to stick to your intentions. So avoid multi-tasking and focus on the task at hand.
USE STICKY NOTES
Post-its aren’t exactly revolutionary, but they’re effective when it comes to closing the IB gap. A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology suggests one of the biggest reasons for an IB gap happens when people are busy or distracted. Many simply forget what they’re trying to achieve! A quick note stuck on your desktop with the words “Off to The Yoga School at 6pm!” can serve as a good reminder even when your mind is preoccupied with work.
